I experienced a warm welcome on arrival and found getting around to be nice and easy. There were caddies readily available and the changing rooms and pro shop were both excellent. There is a great practice range and the putting green was equally good. There is lovely scenery and environment surrounding the course and the atmosphere is perfect for golf. I had a timely tee off and the tees, fairways and greens are all brilliant. There is good course bunkering and course yardage marking throughout the course and I rated the cleanliness and manicuring of the course as 9 out of 10. I maintained a good speed of play during the round and the layout and design of the course presents a good challenge for those who play it. In summary for my Steenberg Golf Course Review I rated my overall enjoyment of the course as 10 out of 10 and think it is superb value for money.

Was a great experience, except the wind was blistering!!!

It can be a bit difficult navigating the course though.

Greens were a bit dirty on some holes from all the twigs and leaves being blown onto it by the wind, and also some players were not fixing their pitch marks.

There's a special on Sundays for non-members, which I think is fantastic.

The whole experience made it easy to get into the game of golf, because most other clubs tend to be purposely unwelcome to beginners.

From Booiking the course till having that well deserved beer, after fighting the wind and the challenge the course presents, was worth every Rand!

Stunning course and very well maintained.

From arrival to departure - AWESOME.

Arrived and as you get close to the Clubhouse you get got stopped and your golf bags taken out of your vehicle, only to find them as you enter the pro shop, never seen this at any golf course. After the round, they clean your shoes and golf trolley (the wheels) with the help of their air gun - this is the reason why don't see grass left by the shoes in the clubhouse/bar. When you come into the half way house, there is a designated area for the golf bags to be placed - which is a great idea - seeing you don't have fight through all the golf bags and carts to get into halfway house. Staff is very friendly and helpfull!

The course itself I could not fault, stunning greens, fairways and tee boxes. One can really see the pride that is taken in their COURSE. Clean, and green. The atmosphere on the course is relaxed and friendly.

Course itself presents a little bit of a challenge but I have played more challenging courses. Wide fairways - but go off the fairway and the beautifull matured trees will challenge you to either - try and go for green or take it safe and tap out to the fairway. Choosing the first option, stike the ball well = no problems, mishit ever so slighlty = BIG trouble.

Yardag marking good but can be better as they only have marking in the middle of the fairway - at least there is markings.

All in all - can't wait to visit Royal Cape again!!

Well looked after course, Greens are in the process of "fixing" but are still playable. Some nice and challenging holes, water being brought into play is awesome and a quit a few of the holes as well! Lets not get started on the bunkers!! Good layout with the bunkers which can quickly make it a very difficult hole to finish.

Fairways are in good condition, tee boxes in fair condition. Good Value for money and will definately be returning for another round!!

Looking forward to visiting Kuilsriver again!

The course is definately not better than Bellville Golf Club yet they are more expensive. But that is my opinion - and I'm not affiliated or a member at Bellville.

Back to the Golf:

The course is in good condition, tee boxes need to be repaired or swapped around more often. To many divets on the tee boxes, especially on the Par 3's where one needs a nice tee box.

Plenty of bunkers - litlle bit of water. Fairways are nice and green with a couple of GUR but nothing serious.

Trees and scenery on the course is really something to admire together with the views of Table Mountain. The course rough is REALLY rough - once in the rough it is very difficult to get back onto the fairway - makes it interesting though.

Breakfast at Halfway House was not to bad, nothing really exciting - but the food came very quickly after order was placed.

I expected more from this course seeing the hype around it from a lot of people!!

Don't think I will play there very quickly again.

Worth Every cent.

Greens are nice and soft and can be misjudged very easily. Yardage Marking can be improved on - color marking not always ideal.

The Dam is a bit low, but WC Rainy season is upon us so levels should go up nicely again.

Challenging cours for beginners with couple of easy holes followed by more challenging ones.

All in all - I can't wait to play Devonvale again.

The Greens are in superb condition, slope as it should slope, fast but not over the top fast.

Don't like the fact that they water the bunkers in the morning - makes it very difficult to get into the sand, and they do have plenty of bunkers. Even the rough is more sand than bush or rough as it should be.

"Wildlife" on the course was really awesome - enjoyed watching them as you wait a couple of minutes for the 4 ball in front of you walking off the green on some of the Par 3, corse speed is fair+ but not as smooth as it could be.

Still hade a good time on the Course and will visit again.

Compliments go to their greens team for scoring a 9 out of 10 and the course was well marked for yardages. There was an abundant availability of Buggies/Carts/Caddies which helped to increase the Speed of Play during the Round and it was also a pleasure to have a timely tee off.

This is a very pleasant track by a small estuary that leads into Plettenburg Bay. The 11th hole is a wonderful looking par-3. If the wind is up then this course would be a challenge. The greens did not roll well and the ball skidded across the surface, rather than rolling consistently. The 18th finishes just in front of the clubhouse, so no slicing into the bar! Good value for the green fee.

Pezula is situated on one of Knysna's "Heads". The road to the hotel/clubhouse leads up from the lagoon basin and past the Knysna GC to the clifftop. Upon parking your car you are warmly greeted by a chap in a buggy who takes your clubs and you are directed to the clubhouse nearby. Be sure that you are properly warmed up as the first hole is stroke-1 and the second hole is really tough, too. Buggies are compulsory and when you play the course you can understand why that is. Some of the cart path inclines are exciting to say the least with stunning views of the Indian Ocean at every turn. Often long carries off the tee are needed. We got a green fee discount through our Knysna B&B. Highly recommended.

The course is relatively flat and is walkable if the temperatures allow. Some holes look like they've had some development over the years. Pretty views towards the back of the first 9. This is yet another course within a residential development. The opening hole is a tough par-4 that requires a very long drive to clear large trees that restrict your second long-shot into a difficult green. The front nine's character is flat, but the back nine becomes quite hilly, so take a buggy if you need it. Other than hole 1 the overriding challenge of this course is not off the tees but the approach to, and putting on, very challenging greens. It will be an excellent test of your short game.). This course is situated south (close to Newlands Cricket Ground) of Cape Town and offers a real break from the majority of newer courses in the Western Cape. It is parkland and a flat and easy walk through mature trees. The clubhouse has an old-world feel which is quite nice. Excellent caddies are available and are inexpensive (NB: they never miss-read a put!). Situated in an exclusive residential development outside Cape Town with its own, small, and exclusive hotel and vineyard is Steenburg. Caddies are available and are inexpensive and they greatly add to the enjoyment of the round. This is not an easy track where shaping the ball helps or being ultra-straight off tee and deck. Throughout the vineyard encroaches offering pretty views of a working farm with a backdrop of the hills behind. Some water features make certain holes important to get clubbing right. Yes, it is more expensive than other courses in the area of similar quality, but this shouldn't put you off. Recommended.

This course is just a few minutes drive NW of down-town Cape Town. We played this course as our first upon arrival from the UK where we hadn't been able to play for weeks due to snow. Milnerton's Pro greeted us warmly and asked where his Melton Mowbray pie was (he's originally from Leics). Off we tee'd not having hit a ball for so long and the sun was beating down hard. The views along Milnerton beach on the first few holes are gob-smacking beautiful. Table Mountain is clearly visible and said that we had truly arrived in RSA. The round was slow being almost 5 hours. The residential development that appears on a numbers of holes has been poorly positioned and meant that on one par-4 the men tee'd off far in advance of the ladies tee. Only slightly errant shots would end up on someone's patio. The half-way house was a very quick visit as we were rudely ousted for members wanting to tee-off on the 10th (NB: slow play wasn't our fault, chaps). Anyway the course is a good warm-up track if you haven't hit a ball for a period of time, so play it early on your tour.

This is a Jack Nicolas design and will cost you a pretty penny to play (it was 20% more expensive than any other of the 14 courses we played in Western Cape). But let's put the green fee to one side as we have travelled 6,000 miles to play here. The welcome is 5-star and you are treated 5-star. The practice facilities are marvellous. The greens very quick. The course design is 5-star too. There is not hole where JN hasn't made you think, "...how am I going to get to the green?". You have to plot your way round this track. There is no rest. As a championship test this was the best we played in RSA. Maybe not the most dramatic scenery, but a must if you've travelled a long way to the wonderful country. This was one of the courses I was truly looking forward to playing amongst our 14 others. The hour-plus journey from our base in Stellenbosch seemed a worthwhile investment. In the reception area they declared themselves in the top elite few courses of RSA. Having played it and many others in the Western Cape I can say that we were a little disappointed. As with many newer tracks in RSA this course meanders through a residential housing development. But do not let this put you off. The set-up of the course was almost like striking the ball off the hallowed turf in Scotland (except a wee bit warmer). The opening hole welcomes you with a wide fairway that gently gets you into the swing of things, but thereafter more tricky features come into play and the wind starts to take its toll. Springbok dance across the fairway which reminds you that you're in the southern hemisphere and not the north. Extensive waste areas come into play on a number of holes as well as fynbos (RSA heather and scrub up to 6 feet high) that gobbles up stray balls off their line. The green fee is good value and only 30 mins drive north of Cape Town. Highly recommended

An average 9-holer that you won't go out of your way to play, but a fun course for a 4-ball wanting a easy drive away from the city centre. Some holes are good and use a slight hill to create uphill and sidehill shots, but the course is fairly straightforward and the 2 lots of 9 holes are not vastly different from each other to be really interesting. Be sure to go for the right green when playing 9 and 18.

Or perhaps you'll drive to Hermanus. Either way, if you're in the area for a few days then Kleinmond is worthy of at least 9 holes of your time. The course is clever in design and uses the lower slope of the mountain-side to good effect. A stream that runs through the courses comes into play often and whilst Kleinmond is not very narrow, stray shots may result in penalty drops for those to agressive or off-line. I'm not sure I'd drive to Kleinmond from Cape Town for a round, but if I was staying in Betty's Bay, Pringle Bay or the general area I'd take my clubs with and try squeeze in at least 1 round.

It's way to busy in the Dec/Jan holidays, but if you have the inclination an overnight stay during non-peak times at a local B&B and all 27 holes is a great time out. With 27 holes it's easy to get on the course and with the friendliest Pro Shop in the Western Cape your needs are sure to be accommodated. The design is clever, challenging and ultimately good golf is rewarded. Weak golf will be found out by the tricky green complexes, but the course is playable for all levels.

The question to ask with 9 hole country courses is: "who plays there?". Locals will enjoy their home course and visitors will be spending time out playing the game they love because they love it. Caledon golf course is not a course that you will get in your car and drive an hour for, just as Caledon is not a town you are going to go out of your way to visit. Enroute to the Garden Route you'll fly by or alternately you won't get past Hermanus where Arabella and the Hermanus course are available. But if you're planning a visit to the casino and/or spa and have your evening mapped out, then a round of golf either early am or late pm is always on the cards. Don't expect a well-watered, well presented, defined course. Enjoy the lay-out and perhaps only play 9 holes. It's not a good course, but it's not that bad either.

With trees lining at least one side of every fairway it is possible to be on the fariway, but have to shape your approach around an infringing tree. With that in mind make a point of looking at future holes as you play and try work out where you may want to be later. The par 5 8th has water fronting the green which is not easily visible from the fairway so think carefully before playing.

A series of great risk/reward holes makes Dezalze a brilliant match play venue.

Who can justify so much for a round of golf?? But get an invite or a great Winter special and if you don't make a plan to get to PV at least once a year you are missing out bigtime. Pearl is a superb test of golf on a top conditioned track that is negative only in a few deja vu feelings on some holes. Sharpen your iron play on the driving range as Pearl is an awesome "second shot" course and will test every iron in your bag.

The Boschenmeer 9 is distinctly different to the Paarl 18. The tree-lined fairways are replaced by housing estate and many will say this detracts for the other 18. Visually this may be so , but from a technical perspective the Boschenmeer 9 is arguably better with more interesting and stronger holes. Try play all 27 holes in one day for a great day of golf.

The variations will test your understanding of how the different lie of the ball affects the ball flight. The middle of the fairway is often no the right line of fhe tee. Aim to high edge and let the sidehill run return to ball to the middle.

I'll be honest - I played this course January 2010, so it has been a long time since i've been there - this review is based on January 2010:

The course needs plenty of work, fairways are in bad condition, the rough was easier to play out of. Greens are hard giving extra bounce where not wanted/needed. It is however a challenging course with lots of trees that can cause you to loose a ball very easily.

If they can get this course in good condition it will acutually be a pleasant golf course!

Very well looked after golf course, stunning greens, awesome fairways and bunkers not so forgiving.

People are friendly yet very strict which is needed on a golf course.

Would recommend this course to anyone looking for a relaxing game of golf!!

For a little town like Darling they really offer a healthy golf course! Uncle Wally can tell you stories in a manner never thought possible. Always Friendly and full of jokes.

Course does need a bit of TLC but bear in mind, it's a small membership and for that they are doing extremely well. Clubhouse is in the process of renovations. Greens are a bit hard, but still playable. fairways are nice and evenly cut. Rough is mmmmm well it's rough!! Water hole is challenging should you get your shot wrong!

Caution though - becarefull of this course in the Summer, on a good day it can become EXTREMELY hot!!

Table Mountain, Signal Hill and then the New Stadium all together makes awesome experience. Course is new lay out thank to the stadium taking some space up of the older Metropolitan.

Faiways are nice and wide, making it easier for beginners, greens are soft making it a bit more challenging for spin and tricky to read. Overall excellent experience!!

The course is well maintained with excellent greens and fairways. The Pro's Shop is well stocked and all the Club's staff are very welcoming and helpful. The course is set in the Paarl Valley with stunning views of the surrounding mountains. It has an excellent 19th. The Club is highly recommended.

When visiting Paarl I always stay at Alba House B & B which provides superb, relaxing accomodation and is extremely efficiently run by Ivana and John Decker. They are the most welcoming and hospitable hosts and go out of their way to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable stay. John is a recent ex captain of Paarl GC. Alba House is located high up in wonderful gardens with perhaps one of the largest swimming pools I have seen in a private house and is within a 3 km drive of Paarl GC. It has commanding views across the valley to the mountains.

Alba House and Paarl GC provide a perfect combination for a very memorable stay and golfing experience.
