The Gary Player Country Club golf course is part of the huge Sun City entertainment complex and borders the - also Gary Player-designed - Lost City golf course and the Pilanesberg National Park.

The course lies amidst beautiful nature and is regarded as one of the best in the world. Stretching over more than 7000 metres, it definitely is one of the world’s longest golf courses. Here, every year in December, during the hot season, the “Million Dollar Challenge”, sponsored by South Africa’s Nedbank, is played.

As this is a championship course it has a lot of golf played on it. The state of the course will be dependent on how far you are from the million dollar. Just expect a slow round as this is a very tough course and the rough is punishing not a course for the faint hearted. The 9th hole is probably one of the most memorable you will ever play as a long par 5 with an island green.

I have been playing the course for years, and it has always been one of the highlights of the year. The last two occassions have been hugely disappointing. It really looked a bit run down...the perfection Sol Kerzner always demanded is gone. Quite frankly I am no longer bothered to make the effort.
